Question 33462: I have home-schol curriculum and no text books. My problem is this:
At 10:00 am two planes leave an airport. If the northbound plane flies 280mph and the southbound plane at 320mph, at what time will they be 1,000 miles apart? Help???

Answer by Earlsdon(6294)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You can use the distance formula for this problem:
where:
d = distance traveled, r = rate of travel (speed) and t = time of travel.
For the north-bound plane:
1) r1 = 280 mph
For the south-bound plane:
2) r2 = 320 mph
You want the sum of the distances (d1 + d2) to equal 1,000 miles.
From equation 1) you get:

From equation 2) you get:

Add the two d's.
Simplify and solve for t.
Divide both sides of the equation by 600

hours.
t = 1 hour and 40 minutes.
