You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The speed of a passenger train is 8 mph faster than the speed of a freight train.
The passenger train travels 270 miles in the same time it takes the freight to travel 230 miles.
Find the speed of each train.
:
Let s = speed of the freight train
then
(s+8) = speed of the pass train
:
Write a time equation, Time = dist/speed
:
Pass time = Freight time
270%2F%28%28s%2B8%29%29 = 230%2Fs
Cross multiply
270s = 230(s+8)
270s = 230s + 1840
270s - 230s = 1840
40s = 1840
s = 1840%2F40
s = 46 mph is the freight
then
46 + 8 = 54 mph is the pass
:
:
Confirm the solution, find the times, they should be equal
270/54 = 5 hrs
230/46 = 5 hrs also
