Question 33336: Hi, my question is:
A river excrusion travels x miles upstream at 3 miles per hour and back to the same place at 5 miles per hour. The round trip takes 48 minutes. State in terms of x, how long the journey takes:
a) on the upstream leg;
b) on the downstream leg;
c) in total
d) Form an equation in x and solve it to find how far upstream the excrusion goes.

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Upstream data:
distance=x miles; rate = 3mi/hr; time= x/3 hrs.
Downstream data:
distance=x miles; rate = 5mi/hr; time= x/5 hrs
EQUATION:
time up + time down = 48 min= 48/60 hrs.
x/3 + x/5 = (4/5) hr.
Multiply thru by 15 to get:
5x+3x=12
9x=12
x=4/3 mi = 1 1/3 miles

Stan H.
