Question 332477: it took a patrol boat 5 hours to travel 80 km up a river against the current and 4 hours for the return trip with the current. find the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the current.
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
speed of boat = x kmph
speed of current = y kmph
..
speed upstream = x-y ;; Time =5 hours
speed downstream = x+y;; Time= 4 hours
..
distance = 80 km
..
80/x-y = 5
80 =5x-5y
16=x-y...............1
..
80/x+y=4
4x+4y=80
x+y=20...............2
..
add eq1 & 2
x+y+x-y=80+16
2x= 96
x= 96/2
x=48 km/h
..
x-y=16
48-y=16
y=48-16
y=32 km/h
