a plane flies 465 miles with the wind and 345 miles against the wind in the same length of time. if the speed of the wind is 20 mph find the speed of the plane in still air.
------------------------
With wind DATA:
dist. = 465 miles ; rate = p+20 mph ; time = d/r = 465/(p+2) hrs
----------------
Against wind DATA:
dist. = 365 miles ; rate = p-20 mph ; time = d/r = 365/(p-20) hrs
====================
Equation:
time = time
465/(p+20) = 365/(p-20)
---
465p - 465*20 = 365p + 365*20
----
100p = 830*20
p = (1/5)830
p = 166 mph (speed of the plane in still air)
