Question 31025: Please help me set this up. Fred leaves John's house and drives toward Tampa at 27mph. Kim leaves 2 hours later and drives the same route at 45 mph. How long will it take Kim to overtake Fred?
Answer by acerX(62)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Fred's time = or the number of miles [OVER] [[leaving only hours in the answer]]
Kim's time = or two hours plus the number of miles [OVER]
setting these two equation equal to each other will give us the number of hours until Kim and Fred are at the same place.
multiply both sides by 27 then by 45 to cancel out the denominators

subtract 27x from both sides
divide by 18
or 3 hours until Kim overtakes Fred.
