after walking west ahe walked north at right angle.
the distance she is from the starting point is the hypotenuse.
side1^2+side2^2= hypotenuse^2
8^2+3^2=HYP^2
64+9=hyp^2
73=hyp^2
8.5miles = hyp the distance from where she started
