Queen Hatshepsut rode a litter at 2 kilometers per hour for the first part of the journey to the necropolis.
She was going to be late, so she changed to a chariot traveling 8 kilometers per hour for the last part of the trip.
If the trip was 28 kilometers to the necropolis and the trip took 8 hours,
how far did she ride in the litter and how far did she ride in the chariot??
:
let d = dist rode in the chariot
then
(28-d) = litter distance
:
Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
:
Time in litter + time in chariot = 8 hrs
+ = 8
Multiply by 8, results:
d + 4(28-d) = 8(8)
d + 112 - 4d = 64
d - 4d = 64 - 112
-3d = -48
d =
d = +16km in the chariot
:
:
Check the solution by finding the times
16/8 = 2 hr
12/2 = 6 hr
------------
total= 8 hrs
