Question 292740: An airplne flew for 4 hours with a 20 km/hour tail wind. The return flight against the same wind took 5 hours. Find the speed of the plane in still air.
I am having trouble finding the distance flown to figure out the answer.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You don't need the distance to solve.
r*t=d
r*t=r*t
The plane flew the same distance in both directions.
For 4 hours the plane flew with the wind pushing it.
For 5 hours return the wind blew against the plane.
So set them equal.
(p+20)*4=(p-20)*5

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let w = wind speed
Let p = speed of plane in still air
p+%2B+w = speed of plane flying with the wind
p+-+w = speed of plane flying against the wind
--------------------
Flying with the wind:
d+=+%28p+%2B+w%29%2A4 km
(1) d+=+%28p+%2B+20%29%2A4 km
Flying against the wind:
d+=+%28p+-+w%29%2A5 km
(2) d+=+%28p+-+20%29%2A5 km
Since d is the same in (1) and (2), they
are equal to eachother
%28p+%2B+20%29%2A4+=+%28p+-+20%29%2A5
4p+%2B+80+=+5p+-+100
p+=+180
The plane's speed in still air is 180 km/hr
