Question 28899: DURING RUSH HOUR, FERNANDO CAN DRIVE 20 MILES USING THE SIDE ROADS IN THE SAME TIME THAT IT TAKES TO TRAVEL 15 MILES ON THE FREEWAY. IF FERNANDO'S RATE ON THE SIDE ROAD IS 9 MILES/HOUR FASTER THAN HIS RATE ON THE FREEWAY, FIND HIS RATE ON THE SIDE ROAD.
Answer by Paul(988)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Equation:
Let the speed be x for 20 miles
Let the speed be x+9 for 15 miles.

15(x+9)=20x
15x+135=20x
5x=135
x=27

15+27=42

Hence for 20 miles he drove at 27mph and for 15 miles he drove at 42mph.
