Question 282902: My professor says there is "an unacceptable answer" and I needed more detail on line 7 of the equation. I am lost. Please help. Here's the original question:
Frank drove 300 miles to the beach for vacation. On the way home, he averaged 10 miles per hour less, and the drive took him one hour longer. What was his total driving time?
D=rt
r= time on the way to the beach
r-10= time returning
t=time on the way to the beach
t+1=return time
r*t=300
(r-10)*(t+1)=300 "You need more detail here."
r=60
t=5
return= 5+1
11 hours total driving time

Let
r = rate/speed on the way to the beach
t = time spent traveling to the beach

Since "On the way home, he averaged 10 miles per hour less, and the drive took him one hour longer", this means that his speed back home is mph and the time it took to get back home is hours.

Now using the equation , we can plug in to get which is the equation that represents the trip to the beach.

On the way back, the rate is now and the time is now meaning that the next equation is

So you have the correct equations.

Answer by Alan3354(69443)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
r*t=300
(r-10)*(t+1)=300 "You need more detail here."
r=60
t=5
return= 5+1
11 hours total driving time
--------------------
Maybe he means from there onward ??
r*t=300
(r-10)*(t+1)=300
-------------------
How did you go from there to
r=60
t=5 ??

I gave this answer the other day. If you can't explain it then he is right to be picky. I didn't explain the math just the set up.
did you even read the problem? Or are you expecting us to do that for you to?
If you even attempted to follow the problem with the answer you should have been able to explain the missing details.
My professor says there is "an unacceptable answer" and I needed more detail on line 7 of the equation. I am lost. Please help. Here's the original question:
Frank drove 300 miles to the beach for vacation. On the way home, he averaged 10 miles per hour less, and the drive took him one hour longer. What was his total driving time?
rate r *time t=distance d
r= time on the way to the beach
r-10= time returning
t=time on the way to the beach
t+1=return time
r*t=d
r*t=300 trip to beach
r*t=d
(r-10)*(t+1)=300 way home
Some questions you should have asked and answered
Where did the factor r-10 come from in the problem?
where did the factor t+1 come from in the problem?
Why multiply them together
r-10 10 miles per hour less,
t+1 drive took him one hour longer
Now for the big missing part how did I get r=60 and t=5?
r*t=300
(r-10)*(t+1)=300
This is where you have to show your work!
This is where the math comes in.
I set upi the equations and explained how I got the equations
r=60 rate going
t=5 time going
return= 5+1 time for return t+1
going plus return equals time fopr trip
5+6=11
11 hours total driving time
