Question 281486: Two vehicles a car and a truck leave an intersection at the same time the car heads east at 70 mph while the truck heads south at 40 mph Find an expression for their distance apart in miles at the end of t hours. At the end of t hours the vehicles are how far apart in miles?
I saw a similar question and follwed the steps I came up with 80.62 but that is wrong what am I doing wrong? Please help.

Eastbound car distance = 70t miles
Sounthbound car distance = 40t miles
-------------------------------------
distance apart = sqrt[(70t^2+(40t)^2} = 80.62t miles

rt=d
We are forming a right triangle.
The distances traveled by the car and truck form the legs of the right triangle.
The distance apart is the hypotenuse.
(70t)^2+(40t)^2=d^2
6500*t^2 = d^2
d=sqrt(6500t^2)
d=10sqrt(65)*t=80.62t
Without knowing the time we can't give the distance d
We are not given the time in numbers so we can't find the distance in numbers.
but it will be about 80.62 *t not just 80.62.
