Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a ship traveling east at 25mph is 10 mi from a harbor when another ship leaves the harbor traveling east at 35mph. how long does it take the second ship to catch up to the first?
-------------------------------------
1st ship DATA:
distance: x-10 mi ; rate = 25 mph ; time = d/r = (x-10)/25 hrs.
-----
2nd ship DATA:
distance = x miles ; rate = 35 mph ; time = d/r = x/35 hrs.
====================
Equation:
time = time
(x-10)/25 = x/35
35x - 350 = 25x
10x = 350
x = 35 miles
-----------------
time = x/35 = 35/35 = 1 hr
