Let = number of geese
given:
(1)
(2)
Multiply both sides of (1) by
and subtract from (2)
(2)
(1)

And, from (1),

There are 97 sheep and 18 geese

Quantity: s + g = 115
Legs:::: 4s +2g = 424
---------------------------
Multiply thru Quantity by 2 to get:
2s + 2g = 230
4s + 2g = 424
--------------------
Subtract 1st from 2nd to get:
2s = 194
s = 97 (# of sheep)

Since s+g = 115, g = 115-97 = 18 (# of geese)
