A freight train leaves a station at 7 A.M and travels North at 40 mph. At 5 A.M, a passanger train leaves on a parallel track and travels North at 80 mph. How long will it take the passanger train to overtake the freigh train?
-------------------------------
Freight train DATA:
rate = 40 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = 40x miles
---------------------------------------------------------
Passenger train DATA:
rate = 80 mph ; time = x + 2 hrs : distance = 80(x+2) miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Note: With the times you posted the passenger train is already
160 miles north when the freight train leaves the station.
