Question 258152: A boat pulls a water skier at a speed of 30 ft/sec. When it reaches the end of the lake, it adds on more skiers, and the speed drops to 25 ft/sec. If the boat traveled the same distance with the single and group skiers, and the trip back with the group skiers took 8 seconds longer, how far, in feet, in one direction, had the boat traveled?

A boat pulls a water skier at a speed of 30 ft/sec.
When it reaches the end of the lake, it adds on more skiers, and the speed drops to 25 ft/sec.
If the boat traveled the same distance with the single and group skiers, and the trip back with the group skiers took 8 seconds longer, how far, in feet, in one direction, had the boat traveled?
:
Let d = the one way distance traveled
:
Write a time equation; Time = dist/speed
:
25 ft/sec time - 30 ft/sec time = 8 seconds
- = 8
Multiply by 150 to clear the denominators, results
6d - 5d = 150(8)
d = 1200 ft one way boat distance
;
:
Check solution by finding the time in seconds of each trip
1200/25 = 48 sec
1200/30 = 40 sec
----------------
differ = 8 sec

That was pretty easy, right?
