Question 242726: A transport plane travels five times as fast as an auto. The plane takes 30 minutes less time to travel 500 miles than it takes the auto to travel 125 miles. Find the rate of each.
Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
500/5x=125/x-.5
500/5x-125/x=.5
(500-5*125)/5x=.5
(500-625)/5x=.5
125=2.5x
x=125/2.5
x=50 mph for the car speed.
5*50=250 mph for the plane.
Proof:
500/250=125/50-.5
2=2.5-.5
2=2
