Train A is traveling at 60mph, and passes the station at 7:10am. Train B is traveling at 80mph, and passes the station at 7:25am. At what time will Train B pass train A?
.
Train A has a 15 minute head start -- Or, .25 hour head start.
.
Applying the distance formula: d = rt
Let x = time when train B catches up with Train A
then
60(x+.25) = 80x
60x+15 = 80x
15 = 20x
0.75 hours = x
Or, in terms of minutes
.75*60 = 45 minutes
.
Answer: Train B will pass Train A at
7:25 am + 45 minutes = 8:10 am
