So every two minutes, he gains 8 feet. 8 feet goes into 400 feet 50 times, so the first guess is 100 minutes (50 times 2 minutes). But that is the wrong answer.
After 49 times of going up 10 and slipping down 2 he will be at the 392 foot mark (49 X 8 = 392). In 8 tenths of a minute (8 feet remaining divided by 10 feet per minute), he will be at the top so he won't slip down anymore. So, 49 times 2 is 98 plus 0.8 = 98.8 minutes or one hour, 38 minutes, 48 seconds.
