a car going 60 mph overtakes a bus traveling at 45 mph that had a 2 hour head start.
How far from the starting point are the vehicles??
:
Let t = travel time of the car
then
(t+2) = travel time of the bus
:
When the car overtakes the bus they will have traveled the same distance.
Write a distance equation: Dist = speed * time
:
60t = 45(t+2)
60t = 45t + 90
60t - 45t = 90
15t = 90
t =
t = 6 hrs travel time of the car
:
Find the distance:
60 * 6 = 360 mi from starting time
:
Check solution by finding the distance of the bus
45(6+2) = 360 mi
