Question 213610: Two planes leave an airport at 11 am, one flying east at a certain speed and the other flying west at twice the speed. If the planes are 2700 miles apart at 2 pm, how fast was each plane flying?
Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since the planes are flying in opposite directions
I can just add the speeds
From 11 am to 2 pm, they have been flying for 3 hrs
Let their combined speed = which is
mi/hr
mi/hr
The planes are flying at 300 mi/hr and 600 mi/hr
check:
OK
