John travels by train to go home and arrives at the railway station every day at 17h00. His wife travels by car to pick him up at the station and arrives at the station at precisely 17h00. 1) Assuming the wife travels at 60km per hour, how far did John walk?
:
Since him walking, knocked 12 min off the normal round trip time, we can say:
How far will she have driven in 12 min at 60 km/hr (12 min = .2 hr)?
.2 * 60 = 12 km
Since he was walking toward her, John walked half that: 6 km

:
2) How far is their home from the station?
I'm not sure how you can find that out.
I'm going to say at least 60 km; less, he could have called her, but she was
on her way when he arrived at the station at 1600.
