Smith bicycled 45 miles going east from Durango, and Jones bicycled 70 miles. Jones averaged 5 miles per hour more than Smith, and his trip took one-half hour longer than Smith's. How fast was each one traveling? Explain your steps as you solve.

Let x be the speed of simth's bike
70(0.5+x)=45(x+5)
35+70x=45x+225
70x=45x+190
25x=190

x=7.6
<7.6+5 = 12.6> Therefore simth was travelling at 7.6mph and jones was travelling at 12.6mph ... Or if that doesn't work I have another solution for it.
45=35+x+5
45=40+x
x=5
5+5=10, Therefore simth was travelling at 5mph and jones was traveling at 10mph

Using deductive reasoning I can come up with the correct answers.

Smith:
distance = speed x time
45 miles = 15miles/hour x 3hours

Jones:
distance = speed x time
70 miles = 20miles/hour x 3.5hours

Unfortunately, I don't know how to do the math to get these answers. Anyone got a clue?
