Soybean meal is 14% protein. Cornmeal is 7% protein.
How many pound of each should be mixed together in order to get a 280 lb
mixture that is 13% protein?
:
Let x = amt of 14% stuff
then
(280-x) = amt of 7% stuff
:
A simple equation:
.14x + .07(280-x) = .13(280)
:
.14x + 19.6 - .07x = 36.4
:
.14x - .07x = 36.4 - 19.6
:
.07x = 16.8
x =
:
x = 240 lb of 14% stuff
then
280 - 240 = 40 lb of 7% stuff
:
:
Check solution
.14(240) = .07(40) = .13(280)

Let x = the required number of pounds of Soybean meal @ 14% protein.
Then (280-x) will be the rquired number of pounds of Cornmeal @ 7% protein.
These are to be added together to obtain 280 pounds of mixture that is 13% protein.
The strategy here is to make an equation in which we add up the two amounts of protein from the Soybean meal and the Cornmeal and set this equal to the amount of protein in 280 pounds of mixture that is 13% protein.
The amount of protein in the Soybean meal can be expressed as x(14%) while the amount of protein in the Cornmeal can be expressed as (280-x)(7%), when these are added, the amount of protein in the final mixture can be expressed as 280(13%).
Here's the required equation after converting the percentages to their equivalent decimal forms.
Simplify the left side.
Subtract 19.6 from both sides.
Divide both sides by 0.07
You will need to add 240 pounds of Soybean meal (14% protein) to pounds of Cornmeal (7% protein) to obtain 280 pounds of mixture that is 13% protein.
