Paddling for 4 hrs with a 6 km/hr current and a return trip against the same
current took 10 hr. What is the speed in still water.
:
Let s = speed in still water
then
(s+6) = speed downstream
and
(s-6) = speed upstream
:
The trip there and the trip back are the same distance, write a Dist equaiton
Dist = time * speed
:
10(s-6) = 4(s+6)
:
10s - 60 = 4s + 24
:
10s - 4s = 24 + 60
6s = 84
s =
s = 14 km/hr
:
:
Check solution by finding the dist
10(8) = 80 km
4(20) = 80 km
