.2x+1=length of the rectangle ("one mile more than twice the width")

If Area=length x width, then:
x%2A%282x%2B1%29=36
2x%5E2%2Bx=36
.
Subtracting 36 from both sides, we get:
2x%5E2%2Bx-36=0
.
Factoring (FOIL), we get:
%282x%2B9%29%28x-4%29=0
.
If 2x+9=0, we get:
2x=-9
x=-9/2, but the width cannot be negative
.
So we take:
x-4=0
x=4
.
The width of the rectangle is 4 miles and the length is 2*4+1=9 miles.
