I am trying to brush up on my algebra, and I am not sure how to find the answer to this problem. I forget how velocity and these sort of problems work, it's been a while since I have been out of school. :-) Thank you! Jessica

What is the distance traveled by a ball thrown downward at a velocity of 12 feet per second if the ball falls for 6 seconds?

Using 32 ft/sec/sec as acceleration due to gravity:
v = 32*6 + 12 feet/sec at impact.
v = 204 ft/sec
The average speed is (12 + 204)/2 = 108 ft/sec
108*6 = 648 feet.

Had the ball just been released with no initial downward speed, the distance would be 16t^2 = 576 feet.
576 + 6*12 = 648 feet also.
