The Yankee Clipper leaves the pier at 9:00am at 8 knots (nautical miles per hour).A half hour later,The Riverboat Rover leaves the same pier in the same direction traveling at 10 knots.
At what time will The Riverboat Rover overtake The Yankee Clipper?
------------------------------
The distances will be the same.
------------------------------
Clipper DATA:
rate = 8 kts/hr ; time = x hrs ; distance = rt = 8x kts
---------------------------------
Rover DATA:
rate = 10 kts/hr ; time = (x-(1/2)) hrs ; distance = rt = 10(x-(1/2)) kts
----------------------------------
EQUATION:
8x = 10(x-(1/2))
8x = 10x - 5
2x = 5
x = 5/2 hrs
----------------
9:00 am + (5/2) hrs. = 11:30 am

Answer by Mathtut(3670) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
distance = rate * time
in this instance distances will be equal so if clipper is 8(T)
.........................................and if riverboat is 10(T-(1/2))
the are equal to each other because distance is equal
8T=10(T-(1/2))
8T=10T-5
2T=5---->clipper travel time
so if its 9:00am when he leaves it is 11:30am when the river boat over takes him
