: Will you please help me with this problem? This is what I know after reading the problem: R(of Lord Nelson)=2R(Brigantine); D(Brigantine)=D(Lord Nelson) + 30; T(Lord Nelson)=6 hours. The brigantine was sailing at full speed and was 30 miles at sea when Lord Nelson began to give chase at twice the speed of the brigantine. If Nelson caught up in 6 hours, how fast was the brigantine traveling? This question is from textbook Algebra 1

R(of Lord Nelson)=2R(Brigantine); D(Brigantine)=D(Lord Nelson) + 30; T(Lord Nelson)=6 hours. The brigantine was sailing at full speed and was 30 miles at sea when Lord Nelson began to give chase at twice the speed of the brigantine. If Nelson caught up in 6 hours, how fast was the brigantine traveling?
:
Let 2R = L.N.'s speed
then
R = the Brig's speed
:
When L.N. catches up with the Brig, they will have traveled the same distance
Write a distance equation; dist = time * speed
:
6(2R) = 6R + 30
12R = 6R + 30
12R - 6R = 30
6R = 30
R =
R = 5 mph is the brig's speed
:
:
Check solution by finding that the distances are equal
5(6) + 30 = 60 mi
10(6) = 60
