Question 163435: Can you help me solve this problem: A man bicycles 5 mph faster than he can walk. He bicycles 24 miles and walks back along the same route in 11 hours. How fast does he walk?
Answer by scott8148(6628) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x=walking speed __ t=d/r
[24/(x+5)]+[24/x]=11 __ multiplying by x(x+5) __ 24x+24x+120=11x^2+55x
0=11x^2+7x-120 __ factoring __ 0=(11x+40)(x-3)
0=11x+40 __ -40/11=x __ negative value not realistic
0=x-3 __ 3=x
