Dave can hike on level ground 3 miles an hour faster than he can on uphill
terrain. yesterday, he hiked 41 miles, spending 2 hours on level ground
and 5 hours on uphill terrain. find his average speed on level ground.
:
let s = his walking speed when going uphill
then
(s+3) = his walking speed on level ground
:
Write a distance equation: Dist = time * speed
:
Uphill dist + level ground dist = 41 miles
5s + 2(s+3) = 41
:
5s + 2s + 6 = 41
:
7s = 41 - 6
:
7s = 35
s =
s = 5 mph going uphill
and
5 + 3 = 8 mph on level ground
:
:
Check solution:
5*5 + 2(8) =
25 + 16 = 41 mi
