K&B River Tours offers a river trip that takes passengers from the K&B dock to a small island that is 24 mi away.
---------------
Dock to Island DATA:
distance = 24 mi ; rate = 10+2 ; time = 24/12 = 2 hrs
-----------
The passengers spend 1 hr at the island and then return to the K&B dock.
-------------------
If the speed of the boat is 10 mph in calm water and the rate of the current is 2 mph, how long does the trip last?
Island to dock DATA:
distance = 24 mi ; rate = 10-2 ; time = 24/8 = 3 hrs
---------------
Total time including the 1 hour on the island is 2 + 1 + 3 = 6 hrs.
-------------------
