Since the jet "drops 244 feet", this means that we start at -244. Since it climbs 197 feet, simply add 197 to -244 to get -244%2B197=-47. So after climbing 197 feet, the plane is still down 47 feet (from it's original height). Since it "drops another 190 feet", just subtract 190 from -47 to get -47-190=-237

So after the height changes, the plane has dropped 237 feet overall.
