Question 153653: Please help me solve: Two hikers, Alan and Ben, are 14.4 miles apart and walking towards each other. They meet in 4 hours. Find the rate of each hiker if Ben walk 0.6 mph faster than Alan. They want to know:

I have know idea on how to even start this problem.

their rate of closure (sum of their speeds) is 14.4/4 or 3.6 mph

so B+A=3.6 __ and B=A+.6

substituting __ (A+.6)+A=3.6 __ 2A=3 __ A=1.5

B=(1.5)+.6 __ B=2.1
