Question 147417: Two trains leave a city at the same time. One travels north at 60 miles per hour and the other travels south at 80 miles per hour. In how many hours will they be 280 miles apart?
Answer by aswathytony(47) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Train travelling north
speed = 60 miles per hr
distance to be covered = 280 miles
time taken to cover 280 miles = distance covered / speed
= 280 miles / 60 miles per hour
= 4.6666 hr
= 4 hr + 0.6666
= 4hr + 0.6666 x 60 minutes
= 4 hr + 40 minutes
= 4hrs 40 minutes
Train travelling to south
speed = 80 miles per hour
distance to be covered = 280 miles
time taken = distance / speed
= 280 miles / 80 miles per hr
= 3. 5 hr
= 3hrs + 0.5 x 60
= 3 hrs + 30 minutes
= 3hrs 30 minutes
i.e, train travelling north covers 280 miles in 4 hrs 40minutes while train travelling south takes 3 hrs 30 minutes to cover 280 miles.
