Question 14469: Please Help!!! I don't know how to set this up in an equation and come up with an answer.
Two people share the driving on a 300-mile trip. One person drives 3 times as far as the other. Find the distance each person drives.

ok....let's see....we can solve this with an equation as you probably already figured out
you have two people so you know to equation will be the sum of two terms equal 300.
There are two drivers: Driver A and Driver B
Let x represent to number of miles Driver A drove.
Driver b drove 3 times as much as Driver A.
So that would be...x+3x=300
Now, let's solve:
x+3x=300
4x=300
x=300/4
x=75
Now you have the miles of Driver A, you cna find out the miles of Driver B.
Driver b=3x
=3 x 75
=225
Therefore, Driver A drove 75 miles and Driver B drove 225 miles.
(let's check to be sure)
225+75=300....yay!
