Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x=Carla, so x-2=Karen

d=rt __ t=d/r

48 min is 48/60 or 4/5 hr

"It takes Carla 48 minutes less to travel 50 miles than it does Karen"
__ (50/x)+(4/5)=50/(x-2)

multiplying by 5x(x-2) __ 250x-500+4x^2-8x=250x __ subtracting 250x __ 4x^2-8x-500=0

dividing by 4 __ x^2-2x-125=0

use quadratic formula to find x
