Question 141855: A pilot flies in a straight path for 1 h 30 min. He then makes a course change, heading 10° to the rightof his original course, flying 2 h in the new direction. If he maintains a constant speed of 625 mi/h,then how far is he from his starting position?
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A pilot flies in a straight path for 1 h 30 min. He then makes a course change, heading 10° to the rightof his original course, flying 2 h in the new direction. If he maintains a constant speed of 625 mi/h,then how far is he from his starting position?
---------
1st leg = 1.5*625 = 937.5 mi
2nd leg = 2*625 = 1300
included angle = 170 degrees
--------------------------------
Use the law of cosines:
The side opposite the 170 degree angle is the distance you want.
a^2 = b^2 + c^2 -2bc Cos(A)
a^2 = 937.5^2 + 1300^2 -2*937.5*1300Cos(170)
Solve for "a".
I'll leave that to you.
Cheers,
Stan H.
