Question 138999: A woman who lives in the suburbs normally gets to her job downtown by bicycling to the nearest subway stop and then taking the train from there. When she times it exactly right and doesn’t have to wait for a train, the journey takes her 30 minutes. One day she has to bicycle the whole way and it takes her 50 minutes. If her average speed on the bike is 12 mph, and the average speed of the subway is 24 mph, find how far it is from her home to the subway stop? How far is the subway stop from her job?
Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
= miles from home to subway
= miles from subway to job
= miles from home to job
I'll use the case where she bicycles all the way to work to find
the distance from her home to her job
mi
substituting,
multiply both sides by
divide both sides by
mi
mi
It is 2 mi from her home to the subway stop.
It is 8 mi from the subway stop from her job.
