Linda drove from Philadelphia to NYC at the rate of 50 miles per hour.
She made the trip from NYC to Philadelphia along the same route, traveling 40 miles per hour.
Her total driving time was 3.6 hours ,
Find the distance between Philadelphia, and NYC
--------------------------
Phil. to NY DATA:
Rate = 50 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = rt = 50x miles
--------------------------
NY to Phil. DATA:
Rate = 40 mph ; time = 3.6-x hrs ; distance = rt = 40(3.6-x) = 144-40x miles
-----------------------------
EQUATION:
distance = distance
50x = 144-40x
90x = 144
x = 1.6 hrs (time from phil to NY)
----------------------
Distance = 50x = 50*1.6 = 80 miles (distance from Phil to NY)
