Question 13605: Hi I have a problem and I don't even know where to start.
Jay and Lisa are traveling west in separate cars on the same highway. Jay is traveling at 60 miles per hour and Lisa at 70 miles per hour. Jay passes Exit 54 at 2:30pm. Lisa passes the same exit at 2:36pm. At what time will Lisa catch up to Jay?

speed = distance/time

Jay:
60 = d/t

Now, Lisa starts 6 minutes later which is 1/10 of an hour... as the speed is miles per hour, so any distance must be miles and any time must be hours.

Lisa:
70 = d/(t-1/10)

Now, the question asks where did they meet? That will be where their d values are the same, so

d = 60t and d = 70(t-(1/10)), so

60t = 70t-7
10t = 7
t = 7/10 hr
--> t = 42 minutes

so they meet at 2:30 + 0:42 --> 3:12pm.
