Distance(d) equals Rate(r) times Time(t) or d=rt; r=d/t and t=d/r

Let t=the time it takes the car to catch the truck after the car starts the trip.
Now we know that when the car starts travelling, the truck has already travelled 45*1 or 45 mi
distance truck travels=45+45t
distance car travels =60t
When these distances are equal, then the car will have caught the truck, so:
45+45t=60t subtract 45t from each side
45+45t-45t=60t-45t collect like terms
45=15t divide both sides by 15
t=3 hrs-------------time it takes the car to catch the truck after the car begins the trip.
