Question 126764: A long distrance trucker traveled 260 miles in one direction during a snow storm. The return trip in rainy weather was accomplished at double the speed and took 5 hours less time. Find the speed going.
The speed going was _______ mph.
This is not from a textbook and I'm having difficulties understand how to set up the problem.

going the same distance in both directions means that the times are inversely proportional to the rates

double the speed means half the time __ if half is 5 hrs less, then the whole is 10 hrs

260 mi in 10 hrs is 26 mph

using equations __ rate times time equals distance __ rt=260 __ t=260/r

rt=2r(t-5) __ rt=2rt-10r __ 260=520-10r __ -260=-10r __ 26=r
