Question 125417: I just need to figure out the formula to solve this problem. On the first part of a 317-mile trip, a salesperson averaged 58 miles per hour. He averaged only 52 miles per hour on the last part of the trip because of an increased volume of traffic. The total time of the trip was 5 hours and 45 minutes. Find the amount of time at each of the two speeds??????

On the first part of a 317-mile trip, a salesperson averaged 58 miles per hour. He averaged only 52 miles per hour on the last part of the trip because of an increased volume of traffic. The total time of the trip was 5 hours and 45 minutes. Find the amount of time at each of the two speeds.
:
Change 5 hr 45 min to hrs: 5.75 hrs
:
Let t = time spent at 58 mph
:
It said the total time was 5.75 hrs, therefore:
(5.75 - t) = time spent at 52 mph
:
Write a distance equation: Distance = speed * time
:
58mph dist + 52mph dist = 317 miles
:
58t + 52(5.75-t) = 317
Here is the equation, you can take it from there.
