Bobby and Rick are in a 10 lap race on a one mile oval track. Bobby, averaging 90mph has completed two laps just as Rick is getting his car onto the track. What speed must Rick average to be even with Bobby and the end of the tenth lap.
:
What you are saying is, "Rick has to complete 10 laps, while Bobby completes 8 laps."
:
Therefore Rick has to complete 10 miles, while Bobby completes 8 miles
:
Let s = required speed to do this
:
The times are equal, make a simple equation from that fact: Time = Dist/speed
=
Cross multiply
8s = 10*90
:
8s = 900
s =
s = 112.5 mph
:
:
Check by finding the times of each
10/112.5 = .089
8/90 = .089
