Question 1209018: In the 1984 Olympics, C.Lewis of the United States won the gold medal in the 100meter race with a time of 9.99 seconds. In the 1896 Olympics,Thomas Burke,also of the United States, won the gold medal in the 100-meter race in 12.0 seconds. If they ran in the same race repeating their respective times, by how many meters would Lewis beat Burke?
Answer by math_tutor2020(3817) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Draw out a number line marked with points A, B, C
A = starting point
B = point Burke is at when Lewis crosses the finish line
C = finish line
Lewis beats Burke by 12.0-9.99 = 2.01 seconds
This will be the time duration Burke needs to use up to go from point B to point C.
The goal is to find the length of segment BC.
Burke has a speed of 100/12.0 = 8.333333 meters per second approximately. The 3's go on forever.
I'll leave this in fraction form.
distance = rate*time
d = r*t
d = (100/12 meters per second)*(2.01 seconds)
d = (100/12)*2.01 meters
d = 16.75 meters is the final answer
