Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
sales in seattle were 360,000
sales in portland were 245,000

it pays to find the difference.
that difference can then be applied to the smaller sales figure to get the prercnt increase, or applied to the larger sales figure to get the percent decrease.

the difference is 115,000
it is that mauch more than the sales in portland, and that much less than the sales in seattle.

a. Seattle's sales were what percent larger than portland's?

115,000 / 245,000 = .469 * 100 = 46.9 % larger than portland's.
percent larger means what percent of the lower sales figure was the increase.

b. Portland sales were what percent smaller than seattle's?

115,000 / 360,000 = .319 * 100 = 31.9% smaller than seattle's.
percent smaller means what percent of the larger sales figure was the decrease.

c. Portland sales were what percent of Seattle's?

245000 / 360000 =.681 * 100 = 68.1% of seattle's.
you don't need the increase or the decrease here.
you just need the total figures.
