he rode 9 miles in 1.5 hours.
his rate was 9/1.5 = 6 miles per hour.
he continued at the same rate for a another half hour at 6 miles per hour = .5 * 6 = 3 miles.
the total distance traveled was 9 + 3 = 12 miles.
at 6 miles per hour, the trip took 12/6 = 2 hours.
he rode 9 miles for the first 1.5 hours and 3 miles for the last .5 hours.

d = r*t, divide both sides by t to change formula to solve for rate: r*t/t = d/t,
r = d/t.
r = 9/3/2 distance 9 divided by 3/2 hr.
r = 9/1 miles divided by 3 half hrs (3/2), invert and multiply 9/1 * 2/3
r = cross divide to get 3/1 * 2/1 = 6 mi. per hr.
We're told Jesse rode at a constant rate so during the last 1/2 hr he
traveled 6/2 miles or 3 miles.
