Try to make this more understandable.
The tall ship makes the trip in 10 hours.
The yacht makes the trip in 2.5 hours.
The tall ship is 30 kn slower than the yacht.
For each boat the trip time multiplied by the speed equals distance traveled.
Know both boats will travel the same distance.
How fast does each boat traveling in knots, nautical miles per hour?
:
let d = the distance both vessels travel
Write a speed equation, speed = dist/time
first, find the distance in nautical miles
Yacht speed - tall ship speed = 30
- = 30
multiply both sides by 10, cancel the denominator and you have
4d - d = 10(30)
3d = 300
d = 300/3
d = 100 n mi
:
Find the speed of each
100/2.5 = 40 knots, yacht speed
100/10 = 10 knots, tall ship speed

A less traditional method for solving the problem, which requires less work....
The distances for the tall ship and yacht are the same, and the ratio of times is 4:1; that means the ratio of speeds is 1:4. So
let x = speed of tall ship in knots
then 4x - speed of yacht in knots
The difference in speeds is 30 knots:
4x-x=30
3x=30
x=10
ANSWERS:
The speed of the tall ship is x=10 knots
The speed of the yacht is 4x=40 knots
