Two cyclists, one averaging 8 miles per hour and the other 12 miles per hour,
starting at the same place and time. If they travel in opposite directions, after how long will they be 98 miles apart?

(1) Short solution

     After   =  =  hours = 4 hours = 4 hours and 54 minutes.    ANSWER

     Here (8+12) = 20 miles per hour is their reproaching rate.

(2) Long solution

    Write total distance equation

       8t + 12t = 98  miles.

    Here "t" is the unknown time.


    Simplify and find "t"

          20t   = 98

            t   =  = =  hours = 4 hours = 4 hours and 54 minutes.    ANSWER


    The answer is the same.
